Can friends join my Minecraft server when I’m offline?

By JetRift · Updated

Yes, if the world runs on a server that your friends can reach without your computer or account. A hosted server can be available while its owner is offline. Opening a single-player world to LAN usually cannot: closing that game ends the session.

Four ways to share a world

OptionOwner offline?What must stay available?
Single player opened to LANUsually noThe owner’s game and computer, plus a reachable network connection.
Self-hosted dedicated serverYesA separate server process, power and internet. The owner can close their Minecraft client.
Minecraft RealmsYes, for invited playersAn active subscription. All players must use the same edition as the Realm.
AternosYes, with a way to start itA friend with Start permission can use the panel. Supported Dawn launcher autostart is another option. Empty servers stop.
JetRiftYesShare the join address and allow friends through the whitelist. Joining an idle world wakes it; the owner’s dashboard can be closed.

Offline access is different from an always-ticking world

An auto-wake server saves your world while nobody is playing and starts it for the next session. It does not simulate farms, furnaces, mobs or redstone while asleep. JetRift currently sleeps an empty world after about two minutes. A player joining starts it again, subject to available capacity and service health.

Keeping a server process running also does not guarantee every farm runs: chunk loading and simulation rules still apply. If continuous empty-world simulation matters, choose hosting with an explicit uptime agreement and check how your farm’s chunks stay active. Do not use bots to bypass a free host’s idle policy.

Set up a server friends can join without you

  1. Choose the edition and server software your group needs. A Java Realm cannot accept Bedrock players; a crossplay host can support both with specific limits.
  2. Upload a copy of your existing world or create a new one. Keep an independent backup before switching hosts.
  3. Copy the server’s join address. Give Bedrock players the separate port too.
  4. Add friends to the whitelist using the exact names the server recognizes. On JetRift, Bedrock names start with a dot.
  5. Close your dashboard and game, then have a friend test a fresh connection. Test after the server has gone idle as well.
  6. Share a way to report startup failures. Give management access only to people you trust; playing should not require sharing your account password.

When JetRift fits

JetRift is free hosting for small groups using Java 26.3 or Bedrock 26.60. Crossplay and wake-on-join are included. It is early access, uses our Butternut engine and does not load Forge, Fabric, Paper or Spigot extensions. Some mechanics differ from vanilla. A manually stopped or failed server may require the owner to start it in the dashboard.
