Minecraft hosting chooser: Java, Bedrock or both?

By JetRift · Updated

Start with your friends’ editions and devices, then check mods and how the server starts. This chooser explains which hosting approach fits those requirements. We run JetRift; the alternatives matter when our limits do not fit your group.

Your options

Java, Bedrock and crossplay

Java runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Bedrock is the edition used on phones, tablets, consoles and the Minecraft for Windows app. Windows players should check which app they launched. Java and Bedrock do not normally join each other’s servers or Realms.

A crossplay server bridges the editions or implements both protocols. Geyser with Floodgate is a common bridge for Java hosts. JetRift supports both directly. Neither approach turns Java client mods into Bedrock add-ons, and exact supported releases still matter.

Options without the chooser

Small group on Java and phones, no Java mods
Consider a crossplay host. JetRift includes crossplay and auto-wake, with exact version and engine compatibility limits. Aternos offers Geyser and a choice of Java server software.
Bedrock-only group on consoles
A Bedrock Realm is usually simpler to join through invitations. Consoles lack the standard custom-server address field. A workaround for another host adds setup and may stop working after updates.
Forge/Fabric modpack or existing Paper plugins
Choose a host supporting that software, such as Aternos or a suitable paid provider. Check the actual modpack requirements. JetRift and Realms do not run those server extensions.
Same-edition friends who prefer a subscription
Compare the appropriate Java or Bedrock Realm with managed hosting. Check player limits, world transfer options and backup recovery before committing.
Large community or continuous simulation
Plan for paid capacity and an uptime agreement. Small-group free hosting and an idle-sleep policy are a poor basis for that requirement.

Before you move your world

Download a backup, test an imported copy and invite one friend from each edition. Check inventories, dimensions, builds and any mechanics your group relies on. A free plan is useful only when its software and limits fit the world you already play.
